CREATE EQUITY IN EDUCATION

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought public attention to the inequity of the K-12 public education system in America -
especially affecting low-income and minority students.
We need to create lasting change in the public education system at the local, state, and policy levels.
Every child, regardless of their socioeconomic status, skin color, gender identity, different abilities... deserves equal access to opportunities in the best possible education, academic resources, and support.

Our calls to action:

Increase Funding

45% of high-poverty schools receive less state & local funding than other schools

To ensure all students have what they need, we need to provide funding for specific programs in targetted areas; not just blanket financial increases in target areas school districts.

Investing funds for additional staff = more individualized educational experiencesHelps repair the achievement gap, especially as it has been widened by COVID.Technology - Invest into keeping it up to date, high speed internet, and coding and computer science for all studentsClose the achievement gap for students of low-income and rural areas
In-person learning - Fund adequate safety supplies, like proper sanitation, face masks, and extra payroll hours for janitorial staff
8.7 million students in US attend school with no counselor on staff
Increase funding for school mental health services = increase student wellbeing, increased academic and future success

Property tax funding is discrimination. Create equitable standards to provide students with equal and equitable resources and opportunitiesDiversity in schools is essential - school staff, teachers, and students.Create racially integrated school systemsStudies show that students who attend racially integrated schools have higher test scores, higher graduation rates, higher critical thinking, higher problem solving skills, and are more likely to go to college
Change district lines to create new standards for inclusionChange the school system at the policy level to hold accountable diversity levelsEvery community has its own unique needs. Individualized plans need to be created in the school systems to make education equitableincrease earning potential.
Only 20% of public school teachers are people of color and 30% are male
Increased diversity in staff and student body allows representation and benefits for students of color and white students. It promotes respect, reduces implicit bias, and increases student performance
